I recorded it on cassette 4-track in my Brooklyn apartment in 1997, pressed up 200 copies, and self-released it as a 7-inch in late 1998. The mixing process must have helped to make the wall of sound more palletable and to enhance the brillance that occurred. The mix and master was done by Cooper Crain of CAVE and Bitchin’ Bajas. the band consisted of Ryley Walker, Brian Sulpizio, Frank Rosaly, Andrew Scott Young, Go Kurosawa, Tomo Katsurada, Kotsuguy, Daoud Popal and Ryu Kurosawa. ![]() Kikagaku Moyo and Ryley Walker Deep Fried Grandeur was recorded live at Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht, Netherlands in 2018. the music builds and strips down with precision timing that is telepathically communicated. There are fuzz guitars, spacious atmospheric backdrops and viola. The album is instrumental with no vocals.ĭeep Fried Grandeur has the classic echo wah wah guitar sound that Kikagaku Moyo provides. the dual bass players manage to move in concert. The guitars create echoing texture in the background and the percussionists softly and slowly build the rhythm. Kikagaku Moyo and Ryley Walker has an exotic sound with the sitar being forward in the mix. the various musicians listen deeply to one another and no one musician pushes the others instead they work as a unit with uncanny sense of balance. Astounding that with so many musicians on stage they were able to produce such an incredible sound with no rehearsal. The stream of consciousness performance is high art The blending of instruments is balanced and clear. Kikagaku Moyo and Ryley Walker Deep Fried Grandeur is two 20 minute songs that sprawl and build slowly. This special and limited edition release is a special treasure for fans of Kikagaku Moyo and Ryley Walker. The sound is unlike anything either band has produced on their own. The album is breath taking with beautiful instrumentation cosmic sitars and brilliant percussion.
